Visit the Begna Waterfall

Begna Waterfall
Begna Waterfall

Description

The Cascata di Begna (Begna Waterfall) is a beautiful hidden gem just a short hike from Porlezza, on the shores of Lake Lugano. This enchanting waterfall cascades down the Rezzo stream in a lush, forested setting, offering a refreshing escape into nature with its cool mist, rocky gorge, and peaceful surroundings.

The easiest way to visit is a pleasant, family-friendly walk starting from the Oratorio di San Giuseppe church in Porlezza (free parking available nearby). Follow the well-marked path toward the hamlet of Begna—it’s about 2–2.5 km round trip, with roughly 100–190 meters of elevation gain, taking 45–60 minutes depending on your pace. The trail is mostly easy and shaded, though the final section near the falls can be a bit steep and slippery when wet, so good shoes are recommended.

Once there, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the waterfall tumbling into a scenic pool, perfect for photos, a quiet picnic, or simply relaxing amid the sounds of rushing water and birdsong. It’s an ideal half-day outing, especially in spring or after rain when the flow is strongest, and combines perfectly with a lakeside stay in Porlezza.

A true slice of untouched Alpine beauty; easy to reach and hard to forget!
